Hi there,
This issue's tip: turn the lump into a weekly amount
When your aid refund arrives, move it into a separate savings account. Subtract rent and other fixed costs until the next refund, divide what's left by the weeks in the semester, and move that weekly amount to your checking account every Monday. It's the easiest way to avoid being broke in week 12.
More in Planning your aid refund, or try the semester budget calculator.
A rule worth knowing
You don't have to accept the full loan amount in your aid offer. You can usually take less, or decline it. See Borrow only what you need.
Reader question
"A company offered to file my FAFSA for $80. Is that normal?" No. The FAFSA is free at StudentAid.gov, and your financial aid office will help for free too. Never pay to file it, and never share your FSA ID.
See you after finals,
