Scams that target students

Fake scholarships, jobs, rentals and loan "help".

4 min read

Students are a favorite target for scammers. Most scams follow a few patterns.

Watch for

  • Scholarships or "aid services" that charge a fee
  • Jobs that send you a check and ask you to send money back
  • Rentals near campus you can't see before paying a deposit
  • Calls about "student loan forgiveness" that ask for a fee or your StudentAid.gov login
  • Messages pretending to be your school asking for passwords

Protect yourself

Never share your FSA ID or passwords, and never pay for free government services. Report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
